{"id":252,"date":"2016-12-04T23:00:15","date_gmt":"2016-12-04T23:00:15","guid":{"rendered":"http:\/\/www.deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/?page_id=252"},"modified":"2017-07-01T22:24:15","modified_gmt":"2017-07-01T22:24:15","slug":"history","status":"publish","type":"page","link":"https:\/\/www.deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/history\/","title":{"rendered":"History"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The need for an Alaska Highway surfaced\u00a0about the time the automobile became a practical vehicle for transportation. But the large cost of the highway delayed the project until WWII necessitated its construction. In February of 1942, only two months after the United States entered the war, Congress authorized\u00a0funding for it.<\/p>\n<p>Construction began March 8, 1942, with one group heading northwest from Dawson Creek and one group heading southeast from Alaska. The rough, muddy, remote terrain proved\u00a0perfect for showing off the capabilities of the new military jeep.\u00a0As the early photo below demonstrates, jeeps were crucial to the project&#8217;s success,<\/p>\n<p style=\"text-align: center;\"><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"size-full wp-image-155599 aligncenter\" src=\"http:\/\/www.ewillys.com\/wp-content\/uploads2\/2014\/01\/alaskan-highway-early-photo.jpg\" alt=\"alaskan-highway-early-photo\" width=\"600\" \/><\/p>\n<p>In addition, according to Steve Hart, &#8220;two Corps of Engineer regiments moved their troops and equipment over the White Pass &amp; Yukon Railroad from Skagway to Whitehorse and worked north and south from there. Another regiment used cat trains to haul their equipment to Ft. St. John before construction began at Dawson Creek and began building from there. So, an initial five regiments plus civilian contractors were all constructing the highway from a number of locations in 1942.&#8221;<\/p>\n<p>In November of 1942, the Alaskan Highway was declared complete with an official ceremony at Soldier&#8217;s Summit. But, that didn&#8217;t mean just anybody could use the highway. There was a war going on, so the road was closed to everyone, but military units or those with permission.<\/p>\n<p>One of those that got permission to travel and photograph the newly built highway\u00a0was Harry Utsy and Herbert Lanks. In 1943, the pair left Philadelphia in a military jeep with a\u00a0trailer in tow, bound for Alaska.\u00a0Together they took\u00a0nine thousand photos and twelve thousand feet of film. In 1944, Lanks reported on his adventure in the <a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewillys.com\/2012\/08\/06\/by-jeep-to-alaska-from-1944\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">September 1944 issue of <em>Popular Photography<\/em><\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1944-Alaska-by-jeep-popular-photography-magazine7.jpg\"><img loading=\"lazy\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-253\" src=\"https:\/\/deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1944-Alaska-by-jeep-popular-photography-magazine7.jpg\" alt=\"1944-alaska-by-jeep-popular-photography-magazine7\" width=\"700\" height=\"399\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1944-Alaska-by-jeep-popular-photography-magazine7.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.deilers.com\/AlaskaOrRust\/wp-content\/uploads\/2016\/12\/1944-Alaska-by-jeep-popular-photography-magazine7-300x171.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"auto, (max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/a><\/p>\n<p>Following WWII, on April 1, 1946, the Alaska Highway was officially transferred to Canada and opened to general traffic. In the 1960s, it was paved. Later, when a\u00a0<a href=\"http:\/\/www.ewillys.com\/2014\/12\/12\/alaska-highway-museum-dawson-creek-canada\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener noreferrer\">Dawson Creek museum<\/a>\u00a0opened, it included several nods to the jeep, recognizing the importance it played in the completion of the wild and remote\u00a0highway.
